Myths About Tyres and Tread Wear

347Views

It is possible to extend the life of your tyres by doing routine inspections on them. However, because the internet spreads urban legends as if they were facts, people who own vehicles might occasionally become confused about the proper way to maintain their tyres. The following is a collection of urban legends that we are more than pleased to debunk. Let’s get straight to it:

1. The tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) will alert you when it is time to replace the tyres on your vehicle. The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, often known as TPMS, may be found in the majority of high-end vehicles on the market today, and you need to be aware of this when you use your 4wd tyre deflator. In addition, there is a common misconception that it monitors when your tyres need to be replaced. That is to say, the TPMS in your vehicle will sound an alarm and remind you to change your tyres at the appropriate time.

However, the TPMS is limited to monitoring only the pressure levels in your tyres at any one time. There is no indication of the rate of wear on the tyre, nor is there any indication of when it is time to change the tyre.

2. If your mechanic determines your tyres are bald, you should get new ones. Let’s say you go to a nearby tyre shop for a pressure check, and the mechanic there says that your tyre’s tread has entirely worn away. But you are perplexed because you have not been encountering any problems recently. He is adamant that you find a replacement as soon as possible. What does one do? Because he is an expert in the field, we may reasonably assume that what he has to say is accurate. Not necessarily.

If your tyres haven’t been causing you any problems and you are certain that there is a significant amount of tread left on them, don’t put all of your faith in the mechanic. He may be just looking to pick up some additional cash. Check the grooves of the tyre for something called a Tread Wear Indicator, or TWI for short. If your tyre is truly becoming worn down, the treads will have worn down to the same level as the indication. However, if the tread is far off from where it should be, you have just avoided spending a lot of money! You may thank us later.

3. Should I purchase tyres in sets of four or not? It’s a common misconception that you should only buy automobile tyres in sets of four, but this is really not the case. You should only replace your tyres if you are certain that they are bald or damaged. If the front tyres have a large amount of tread depth, yet your rear tyres have been significantly damaged, you should solely replace the back tyres.

4. Only realign your vehicle’s wheels when you replace them. A lot of people who own cars think that replacing the tyres on their vehicles is the only time they need to worry about wheel alignment. The fact is thatrealigning your vehicle’s wheels is recommended once per year or for every 10,000 kilometres driven, whichever comes first. Before going on a road trip, you need to make sure that the alignment of your wheels is correct.
